Lachlan River Studios

Canberra Region film industry expands with new Film & HDTV Production Studio in Cowra.

Canberra based Film & TV Production house, the NRS GROUP, are full steam ahead with their plans to develop a cutting edge Film & High Definition Television (HDTV) production studio within the township of Cowra, an easy 2 hour drive from the capital city. The company recently acquired a 160 acre (648,400sqm) site, with over 10,000sqm of clear span buildings previously operated as a wool scour.

“The infrastructure is ideal for a relatively easy conversion into a substantial studio” says NRS Group, Managing Director Graham Patrick. “With an electricity substation on site, three large internal open spaces each of around 3500sqm, various workshops, an office space of 800sqm, a back-lot bordered by the Lachlan River, and much more, all in a very quiet area. It’s perfect!”

“The concept is to build a creative community, not just a studio, where projects can go from script to screen.” says Graham Patrick “We aim to provide a relaxed and easy alternative to the usual hustle and bustle of city based production”.

For Australian and international production companies it means being able to converge in a beautiful rural setting, work in the studio or on location with experienced crew and professional equipment, and enjoy secure, 5-star accommodation within close proximity for cast and crew. “There’s no trawling through traffic twice a day for hours. All the amenities are minutes away in Cowra and after a hard days work crew can hit the gym or relax beside the pool, all within the estate.”

The NRS GROUP will maintain its studios in the ACT along with the expansion into NSW allowing the company to further develop growing production opportunities in the international market. “We have successfully completed 100 episodes of a major series for broadcast on the Chinese National broadcaster, CCTV.” The 100 x 30 minute series about the history of the Western World has been produced in HDTV and was shot in international locations by NRS GROUP’s crew. Although the Cowra studio is still in it’s early stage of development, it’s already proving invaluable for the series. “We built a couple of World War 1 trenches in one of the studios and shot some HDTV recreations to match into archival footage. The space works really well” says Patrick.

“Emerging market opportunities like China, that have  huge demands, also have lower budgets. So the challenge is to create high quality content at a competitive rate ” says Patrick “HDTV has provided the technology and the new studios will provide us with the infrastructure, to produce high quality content at a relatively low cost which will enable us to compete with high end film production”.
